Sea Turtle Conservation in Mexico

  |   For  |  0 Comentarios

Getting back to nature and helping sea turtles has been a Banamex tradition for eight years and such a popular one that 1,000 employees applied to volunteer at this summer’s Sea Turtle Conservation & Community Development program. Over the years, the program has been developed in partnership with the Mexican government and local communities where the sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

Mexico is home to seven of the world’s eight species of sea turtles, which makes preserving these animals a key priority for our country. In a scant eight years, 513 Mexican and U.S. volunteers have donated 34,880 hours of service to set up 13 sea turtle camps across Mexico, preserved and protected 16,241 sea turtle eggs and released 34,764 baby turtles into the sea.

That’s eight generations of turtles that have been launched into the ocean! This year, Banamex began a two-year commitment at the Chenkan camp in Campeche, which is on the Gulf of Mexico. Eighty-two employees volunteered 9,700 hours placing the eggs in artificial nests and released 1,200 newly-hatched baby turtles into the sea.

What’s it like to volunteer at a Sea Turtle Conservation camp?

During the day, volunteers work to improve the observation station of the CONANP (National Commission for Protected Natural Areas), the government entity in charge of protecting sea turtles. This is where the scientists and volunteers, from Mexico and around the world, live during the project.

Activities include:

  • Construction work to maintain the turtles’ nesting areas to ensure the rescued eggs are protected from predators. In addition, they make new artificial nests and level the sand so turtles have a clear path to lay their eggs.
  • At night, volunteers divide into groups and patrol more than 15 miles of beaches, watching for the turtles to emerge from the sea and lay their eggs.
  • Volunteers must be very quiet and wait for the turtles to finish and go back to the sea before carefully placing the eggs in coolers and carrying them to artificial nests in the camp. They finish at 3:00 or 4:00 a.m., exhausted but happy!
  • Field trips into the sea to count, measure, and weigh young turtles that live in water near the shore. Volunteers also installed GPS trackers and barcodes to monitor turtles’ routes in the ocean over the course of their lives.

“We are so pleased with the Banamex volunteers who have supported the conservation program. Their commitment, passion and energy inspire us to continue our efforts,” said Adriana Laura Sarti, Sea Turtle National Conservation of the Mexican government

Other team successes this year:

  • For the first time, the program was linked to Citi’s Green Team and has been recognized by the Secretary of Environment in Mexico, who is laddering our efforts up to national and international impact, with the inclusion of Banamex Citi Volunteer program in the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
  • Measuring carbon emissions of the program in an effort to minimize our carbon footprint.
  • Created 164 community development activities – raising awareness about sea turtle conservation and giving local residents the opportunity to be involved in the study of the species, including workshops offering financial and environmental education.

There are a total of 500 camps all over Mexico and Banamex’ long-term goal is to positively impact each.

Citi Launches e for Education

Citi announced the launch of e for Education, a three-month initiative to raise funds for education-related nonprofits around the world. Beginning October 1st and through December 31, Citi will donate funds to several charities based on a percentage of institutional client FX transaction volumes executed through its electronic trading platform, Velocity.

Citi Velocity is an award-winning proprietary FX electronic trading platform for institutional clients. It provides real-time pricing with one-click trading for multiple foreign exchange products, including spot, forwards, swaps and options. Citi Velocity is used by a large number of Citi’s institutional clients globally not only for trading but also as their source for research, economics, FX market color and post-trade activity.

“We believe e for Education is the first and certainly the largest effort by a firm seeking to translate its electronic FX trading activity into philanthropic dollars,” said Jeff Feig, Citi’s Global Head of G-10 FX. “Citi believes that access to quality education is the key to unlocking a lifetime of opportunity and we are excited to launch an initiative that will benefit youth around the world.”

Six organizations, spanning a range of geographies and core focus areas, were selected to benefit from the e for Education initiative. Funds will be donated to each organization based on the geographic location of individual Citi Velocity clients, although users can also override the default and earmark their corresponding donation to any e for Education organization of their choosing. The e for Education beneficiaries include:

  • Civic Builders (North America) Civic Builders partners with the nation’s best educators to build state-of-the-art, low-cost charter schools for children and families in underserved neighborhoods.
  • EMpower (Eastern Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Africa) supports local organizations in emerging markets countries that provide at-risk youth with the tools and resources they need to lead healthy, productive lives.
  • No Greater Sacrifice (North America) is dedicated to the children of fallen and wounded U.S. military service members by delivering scholarships and resources to improve their quality of life through the pursuit of higher education.
  • Room to Read (Asia/Africa) seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in the developing world by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.
  • Teach First (United Kingdom) works towards a day when no child’s educational success is limited by their socio-economic background.
  • Uncommon Schools (North America) starts and manages outstanding urban public charter schools that close the achievement gap and prepare low-income students to graduate from college.

Citi, one of the largest FX providers in the world, is not setting specific fundraising goals, but has also not imposed a cap on the maximum amount that may be donated. Total donations will be driven purely by client FX transaction volumes.

“Citi has a long history of supporting educational ambitions, whether it’s through our businesses or through the work of the Citi Foundation,” said Bapi Maitra, Citi’s Global Head of Institutional e-Commerce Sales. “The e for Education initiative builds on Citi’s track record of connecting students around the world to educational opportunities and support services that empower them to improve their lives.”

El héroe discreto, Mario Vargas Llosa’s first novel after being awarded the Nobel Prize, will be available in bookstores nationwide this month.

As in his best works, the author of The Feast of the Goat (La Fiesta del Chivo), The Way to Paradise (El Paraiso en la otra esquina), The Bad Girl (Travesuras de la nina mala) and The Dream of the Celt (El sueno del celta), once again touches upon the question of human endurance before power.

El heroe discreto simultaneously recounts the life of two very different men. Felicito Yanaque is a small-business owner from Piura who is being blackmailed. Ismael Carrera is a successful businessman from Lima who is plotting a shocking reprisal against his two good-for-nothing sons who would like to see him dead. In their own way, both are quiet rebels trying to take charge of their own destinies: While Ismael defies every convention of his social class, Felicito uses a few vital maxims as a foothold against blackmail. While they cannot be viewed as avenging angels, both soar high above society’s narrow-mindedness to lead their lives according to their dreams and ideals. In this humorously melodramatic account, which takes place in the booming Peru of today, Piura and Lima become imagined territories inhabited by many of Vargas Llosa’s beloved characters

Corvo Bianco, or “white crow” in Italian, has opened at 446 Columbus Avenue, and 81st Street, bringing coastal Italian fare to the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Executive Chef Elizabeth Falkner helms the kitchen, turning out both authentic and inspired takes on Italian cuisine that highlight fresh seafood, bright flavors, and handmade pasta.

An abbreviated bar menu offers inventive Bruschetta and a number of Pizza Griglia and Panini, with a beverage program boasting a 120-bottle wine list curated by Wine Director Enrique Duran. An impressive collection of both international and domestic varietals are poured; 30 of which are priced at $33. Ward III mixologist Michael Neff has created a number of signature cocktails incorporating complex amaros and infusions such as an option featuring Rye, Averna, bitters, and Earl Grey Tea. Corvo Bianco also offers draft and bottled craft beer.

“We wanted to bring the Upper West Side community a glimpse of that downtown vibe,” says Mexican co-owner Luis González Rul. “We hope that Corvo Bianco will cater to families, tourists, older crowds and younger crowds. But first and foremost, we want to be a neighborhood restaurant—a place where everyone feels welcome and at-home,” adds Paulina González Rul, co-owner and image consultant of Corvo Bianco.

The 225-seat restaurant, designed by the Mexican architect Mauricio Zermeño-Bessonart, is housed in what used to be the historic Endicott Hotel. Zermeño aimed to preserve much of the building’s original architecture and integrity, while also incorporating elements reminiscent of Italy’s iconic osterias and terraces. “We wanted something sophisticated-chic, yet cozy and inviting,” says Zermeño. Original brick archways line the perimeter of the main dining room, while a landmarked skylight sends natural sunbeams throughout the 7,000 sq. foot space. A terracotta fireplace to the back of the main dining room anchors the space and complements the potted plants dappled across the walls. For special occasions, a 30-seat private dining room to the side of the main floor is the perfect alcove from the bustling restaurant.

Corvo Bianco is located at 446 Columbus Avenue, and 81st Street, and will be open Sunday through Thursday 5:00pm to 12:30am, and Friday & Saturday 5:00pm to 1:30am.
